This story takes place during the two years I worked at an advertising company, just before joining the bank.

I owe that job to my elder brother’s boss, who helped me land it at just the right time. My salary at the time was barely Rs. 100, equivalent to a small fortune today. I jumped at the opportunity. Although the job had its challenges, I won’t go into those details—some things are better left in eternal suspense.

I commuted from Arumbakkam to Mount Road daily. Interestingly, in all my career shifts, my office and home were rarely close to each other. I would take a bus to New College, walk past what is now the Sathyam Theatre complex, cross Mount Road, and head toward the future location of the Anand Theatre. My route passed by the Bank of America building, which I would eye with longing, wondering if I could ever land a job there. Just before the Ananda Vikatan Complex, I would turn into a small lane where the advertising firm operated from an independent building.

On my way to work, I met some remarkable individuals. One gentleman, always in sunglasses, intrigued me with his demeanor. He ran a small business manufacturing electronically operated tap. As we talked, I casually suggested he market his product to hotels and restaurants. Impressed, he offered me a job on the spot, saying, “You’re the kind of person I need.”

Although tempted, I couldn’t leave my current job with its higher pay. Still, we remained good acquaintances, and I’ve never forgotten him—a kind man who saw potential in me.

The advertising firm’s manager was strict and made sure I never left before 9 p.m. Late hours meant dangerous commutes back home, and I often found myself walking long distances alone. I even had to dodge stray dogs along the way.

But how did I manage to attend typewriting classes despite the manager’s strict rules?
