The word “death” is terrifying. As we grow older and closer to the end, it causes even more discomfort. Long ago, I wrote a poem—perhaps not the most lyrical, but meaningful. It explored three ways people might react if they knew their date of death. Some might seek redemption, become devout, and strive for goodness. Others might indulge in fleeting pleasures, knowing their time is limited. Still, others might carry on as they are, unaffected by the knowledge.

When I posted poems about death on the Fanstory website, I received many messages asking, “Why remind us of this?” Most people seemed more comfortable discussing birth or rebirth but avoided the word “death.”

Yet, death is the only certainty in life. Why fear it?

Even I am not immune to this fear. We can’t claim prior experience with death, though some recount near-death experiences. These encounters evoke curiosity—what does it feel like? Is it terrifying or peaceful?

Personally, I believe the fear isn’t of death itself but of how we will die. No one wants to suffer; that’s where the fear lies.
